The Mount Hospital

Questions

Does the use of black and white editing change the mood of this photograph? If so, in what way?

How does the composition of this photograph reflect the Theme of Urban Decay?

Does the depth of field adjust the mood? If so, how?

  1. I like the location of the shoot because it is revelent to the project. I also like the composition of the photograph because it seems as if i am looking through the window myself. I also like the fact that it has a large depth of field.

  2. For me, the change to black&white enhances the atmosphere of the photo. The contrast between the blacks in the foreground and the whites in the background has created a framing effect which seems to, as if by accident, divide the subjects of the photo. for instance in the bottom half we have only the decaying buildings. Because we have only the buildings to focus on I find that I take in more of the details.

  3. 1.)the black and white within the image makes the images and the content appear old. which shows 'decay' as it represtents how time changes things.
2.) this photograph has been taken through a risen window which shows not only the inside of building but also the outside and the trees in the far distance. showing the trees shows that people can see how the decay has only effected this building and not everything around it.
3.) this photograph appears dark and restriced. it feels cold. using these colours shows this. its plain and dull however i feel there is more behind this that i am not aware of.

  4. 1) Makes the photograph seem more rustic and old compared to if it was in colour the photograph seems more cold.
2)I belive that the compositio makes me feel very costrophobic in the frontal layer and opens out into a dull and durey landscape
3)I belive that the shallow depth of field adds to the mood because it makes you persoanlly focus on the decay and rot in the foreground of the door and that instantly makes you feel horrified

  5. 1.By being black and white rather than colour I find the photo more atmospheric.
2.The decay is there in front of you, on the roof and the edges of the windowless frame.
3.The depth of field is fully focased on the decay in the forground which it is meant to be and I feel reflects urban decay.

  6. The use of black and white colours on this photogrpah makes it look more spooky. The image is quite spooky by itself but in black and white it looks like it could be part of an old horror film.
The composition definately reflects the theme of urban decay as there is decay in both the window frame and building outside the window. This contrasts with the live trees in the background.
The large depth of field means the whole photo is in focus, which is important as it allows the viewer to see the contrast in decay with the trees.

  7. I do think the use of black and white colours changes the mood of this photograph. It creates a darker atmostphere. This is also enhanced by the limited view out of the window making the image appear darker and more mysterious. I think the theme of urban decay is particularly inforced by the wearing of the window pane showing distress. The depth of field helps create a focal point on the window pane and helps to draw your eye into the distance.

  8. The mood flowing from this dramatic black and white photograph relefects both Urban Decay, Neglect and an almost eerie presence.
The photographer has artistically used the window frame to surround the view whilst also enticing you to look beyond and travel with the lens. I feel myself connecting with this photograph and feel as if I have been on an Urban Decay journey with the photographer.
The depth of field allows you to look beyond and infront of the decaying building.

  9. Black and white makes the photograph more intence as it looks quite scary and abandoned.
The way in which the photograph has been taken makes it feel eerier and you can see the decay in the way in which it has been photographed.
I like the fact you can see beyond the window, the window makes me feel trapped, but the fact I can see beyond it makes me feel as if I can leave.
